Java Webcam Settings

If you have the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment installed on your computer, you will need to make some changes to the Java settings to ensure that the webcam displays correctly, otherwise you may see an unchanging image from the camera or the message "Camera #1 is not ready".

To check what version of the Java Runtime Environment is installed, you should see the Java icon in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen, next to the clock, after loading the webcam page. Double-clicking on this icon will display information about the version installed.

If the version number shown is 1.6.0 (Java 6) or later, you will need to follow the instructions below, to ensure that the webcam displays correctly. If the version number shown is 1.5.0 or earlier, you do not need to perform these steps.

1. Right-click on the Java icon in the notification area at the bottom right of the screen and choose the Open Control Panel option from the menu.

2. In the Temporary Internet Files section at the bottom of the Java Control Panel window, click the Settings button.

3. On the Temporary Files Settings window, ensure that the Keep temporary files on my computer box is not ticked.

4. Click the OK button to close the Temporary Files Settings window.

5. Click the OK button to close the Java Control Panel.

This will ensure that new images are downloaded from the webcam as they update. When you have completed these steps, you will need to close all browser windows to ensure that the Java runtime is unloaded (the Java icon should then disappear from the notification area).

These steps are safe to perform and do not affect the security of your computer in any way.

If you still see the message "Camera #1 is not ready", you may also need to delete the temporary internet files that your browser stores on your computer. The procedure for this will depend on the browser you are using. Below are instructions for performing this in Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox 2 but please refer to the online help provided in your browser software for more information:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer 7, go to the Tools menu and choose Internet Options, then in the Browsing history section, click the Delete button to display the Delete Browsing History window. Click the Delete Files button and wait for the temporary files to be deleted. Finally click the Close button on the Delete Browsing History window and the OK button on the Internet Options window to return to Internet Explorer.
  • If you are using Mozilla Firefox 2, go to the Tools menu and choose the Clear Private Data option. Ensure that the Cache option is ticked and then click the Clear Private Data Now button.

When you have followed all of these steps, please click here to return to the webcam.
